CME Credit Approval for U-M Activities
Regional and national activities for non-UMHS personnel are produced and CME credit designated through the Office of Continuing Medical Education. Contact the Director of OCME at 734-763-1401 for further information.
The Department of Medical Education also designates credit for other educational activities, which are managed by individual departments within the University of Michigan Health System. Information and credit application forms for these activities are presented below.
Types of CME Activities
- Departmental activities primarily for UMHS personnel – Includes activities such as departmental grand rounds, case conferences, journal clubs, visiting faculty presentations, etc.
- Departmental activities primarily for limited groups of non-UMHS personnel – Includes activities such as alumni meetings, scientific programs, outreach programs, educational activities that are part of research projects, activities jointly sponsored with local medical societies, etc.
Application Fees
- Departmental activities primarily for UMHS personnel – No direct fees are charged. The Faculty Group Practice annually funds the cost.
- Non-UMHS personnel – The application fee for the activity is $500 plus $20 for each individual who receives credit.
Application Process
All application forms must be signed by both the faculty member responsible for the activity (as listed in Section 1.e on the form) and the chair of the sponsoring department (as listed in section 1.d).Of the following forms, 1 and 2 are always required; 3 and 4 may be required.
- Application form for Designation of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit (required)
- CME Planner/Faculty Disclosure form (required - disclosure form(s) for the CME planner(s) must be submitted with the application)
- Supplemental Documentation Form for Joint Sponsorship (required only if activity is jointly sponsored with a non-Medical School group)
- Draft Budget (required only if activity is jointly sponsored with a non-Medical School group)
Note: For Department of Internal Medicine activities, the associate chair for research, Dr. Benjamin Margolis, signs for the chair.
Sample Forms/Templates:
- Budget (a template that can be used in preparation of draft budget required for jointly sponsored activities)
- Faculty Invitation/Confirmation Letter (illustrates communicating target audience, activity goals and other information associated with CME requirements to potential CME activity faculty)
- Written Agreement of Financial Support from a Commercial Company (a template that can be used to document receipt of commercial funds or in-kind support for a CME activity)
Final Report Process for Non-UMHS Personnel
The information provided in this section is for use with departmental activities primarily for non-UMHS personnel only. The final report process for all other activities is handled on an annual basis via a different process.
After a CME activity is complete, the following report must be submitted and signed by the same individuals who signed the application form for the activity.
